Painting instructions for Uula Oil Paint. Uula Oil Paint is an exterior paint made with boiled linseed oil, colour pigments and pine turpentine. Boiled linseed oil as the binder provides a vapour permeable surface that allows the wood to breathe. Water naturally evaporates through the paint ensuring no moisture is trapped underneath that might cause the paint to peel off or for the wood to decay. Due to its excellent covering qualities one coat is enough for a rich and smooth finish. Uula Oil Paint is suited to exterior wooden surfaces that are untreated or have previously been painted with paint based on an oil, alkyd or plastic binder. Also suitable for painting industrially primed wood surfaces and plastered concrete foundations.

Reserve enough paint for large surfaces to avoid potential tonal variation in different batches. The paint must always be stirred well before and during use. Check the colour before painting. Test the paint on a separate piece of wood and wait for the paint to dry for true colour. For a smooth and even toned finish, paint a whole board at a time from top to bottom in vertical weatherboarding, or side to side in horizontal boarding, starting at the top of the wall. Also paint open ends of timber carefully to avoid cracking and splitting of boards.
Application and conditions
The surface must be dry and the moisture content of the wood below 15 %. The relative air humidity must be below 80 % and the air temperature at least +10°C. Touch dry in 1–3 days, depending on the circumstances. A possible second coat may be applied after 3 days at the earliest. (Drying time at 20°C and <80 % relative humidity) Warmth and light are required for the paint to dry. Do not paint in the rain, in direct sunlight or on sun heated surfaces.
We recommend painting with a paint brush. If you are using a high pressure sprayer for painting, spread the paint with a brush after spraying to ensure an even finish. Thin the paint for spray painting by 10 % with Uula Oil Paint Thinner.
Preparation & Priming & Finishing
Preparation
Wash dirty surfaces with Uula Paint Washing Agent and mouldy ones with Uula Mould Wash. Remove old peeling and flaky paint with a wire brush and scraper. Remove old paint as thoroughly as possible. Old, thick layers of paint can be removed efficiently by using Uula Paint Remover. Roughen new planed surfaces by sanding them to ensure adhesion. If painting is postponed to the following summer, protect the surface with Uula Anti-Mould Agent.
Priming:
Previously painted exterior wood surfaces: Prime bare patches of wood with Uula Oil Paint thinned by 20-25% with Uula Oil Paint Thinner or Pine Turpentine and treat the rest of the surface with Uula Anti-Mould Agent.
New exterior wood surfaces: Prime new exterior surfaces with Uula Oil Paint thinned by 20-25%. If the surface is new planed timber, roughen the surface by sanding to ensure adhesion or protect the surface with Uula Anti-Mould Agent and let the wood age for 1-2 years before painting.
New, industrially primed wood surface: Does not need priming or treating with Uula Anti-Mould Agent.
Metal surfaces: Prime metal surfaces with anti-rust primer before painting.
Finishing:
Once primed, paint one thick coat using plenty of paint on the brush. To ensure an even finish avoid patching up the paintwork afterwards. We recommend painting two coats if the surface is exposed to harsh climate conditions. If the surface is painted twice (e.g. when painting loose boards) thin the paint 20-40% for the first coat. When painting over old Nordic cooked flour paint, remove the Nordic paint from the surface, thin the paint by 15–20% and paint with one coat.
Additional information
Coverage: Planed timber or previously painted surface 7 m2/l, rough sawn timber 5 m2/l.

Cleaning of equipment: Clean your tools with Uula Universal Thinner or white spirit and rinse with soap and water.
Storage and disposal: Keep in a cool and dry place. Keep out of reach of children. Does not freeze. Always stir well before use as the pigment settles during storage. Dry and empty containers can be recycled. Liquid waste must be taken to a municipal hazardous waste collection point.
